About this selection

How to choose

Ammonites for a collection or interior are chosen by the preservation of the spiral, the finish and the way they will be displayed. A polished slice reveals the inner chambers and septa and needs side light and a stable horizontal surface. A nacreous shell plays with colour as the angle changes, so it looks good on an open shelf or a rotating stand. An ammonite in matrix reads like a relief and suits wall display. Check the edge of the aperture and the overall line of the spiral: that is where any chips show most. For a study, ammonites of twenty centimetres in diameter or more are usually chosen.
