Cleoniceras is a genus of large ammonites that lived in the seas of the Cretaceous period. Their shells are found in the sedimentary rocks of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but the finest are recovered in Madagascar.

Here the shell has been replaced by calcite, capable of taking on the most unexpected colours. The cut reveals the internal structure: septa, chambers and the siphuncle by which the mollusc governed its buoyancy.
