Before us is the metallic part of the Seymchan pallasite: a zone of pure metal without grains of olivine. Seymchan is heterogeneous, and such areas occur alongside pallasitic zones. Olivine is not present everywhere in Seymchan, but only in zones where the metal contacted the mantle of a protoplanet; slices with crystals are therefore a great rarity and are valued separately.
Seymchan is a stony-iron meteorite found in Magadan Oblast near the settlement of the same name. The body was heterogeneous: some of its parts contain grains of olivine, others consist of solid nickel-iron; both materials are matter from a single meteorite.
On the polished surface of the solid metal, the Widmanstätten pattern is revealed: it forms only during cooling at one degree per million years in the interior of a cosmic body, and it cannot be reproduced on Earth.
As found
The same Seymchan, only this portion fell on pure metal without olivine. From outside it cannot be told apart — the cut decides.
