Omolon is a stony-iron meteorite weighing two hundred and fifty kg that fell in the Magadan region, in the basin of the Omolon River. It was found by the reindeer herder Ivan Tynavyi.
Pallasites such as Omolon were born at the boundary of core and mantle of a protoplanet: metal set around crystals of olivine. On the plate this structure is visible in full.
As found
Omolon was found in the basin of the river of the same name as a heavy stone beneath a dark crust. The olivine and the metallic lattice were revealed only after the cut.
