This 46 cm tusk is defined by its warm honey-amber colour: in mood it is softer than the dark Yakutian specimens, and it visibly glows along the turns. By nature it is a modified incisor made of dentine, yet in this shade it is closer to a precious natural object than to a dry palaeontological find.

This tusk took a warm tone from the ground: honey-amber along its whole length, with golden shifts following the layers of dentine. The tip is fine and tapers to nothing — the animal did not wear it down on crusted snow and soil.

In life

The woolly mammoth of glacial Yakutia: herds moved across a dry cold prairie where the tundra lies today.
