Across the dry cold prairie of the Late Pleistocene, which occupied the place of today's Yakutian tundra, mammoth herds moved as habitually as reindeer move across it today.
A mammoth tusk is a greatly enlarged incisor that grows throughout the animal's life and is laid down in layers of dentine. A symmetrical pair from one animal rarely reaches us: single tusks are the usual find.
This pair was raised from the Yakutian permafrost and has retained its natural patina and deep curve. The length along the outer curve is 250 centimetres, the total weight of the pair 74 kilograms.
The find is between ten and forty thousand years old. A pair from a single find is a rarity: more often tusks pass into different hands one by one.
