Coelodonta antiquitatis — a beast of glacial Eurasia beneath thick fur, weighing up to three and a half tonnes: the second heaviest inhabitant of the mammoth steppe after the mammoth.
Its silhouette is recognisable: a low-set skull, a short powerful neck, a deep rib cage, a heavy pelvis, short columnar legs. So it held itself in life — head to the ground, its whole mass forward.
The skeleton was found in Yakutia and has survived entire, with its characteristic large horns.
The specimen is between fifty and one hundred and fifty thousand years old. Complete woolly rhinoceros skeletons can be counted on the fingers even in museum collections.

The rhinoceros repeats the skeleton’s stance step for step. The mammoth steppe, dry grass and first snow — the landscape in which the species lived for hundreds of thousands of years.
