The mammoth steppe was sustained less by climate than by its own inhabitants. For centuries herds of woolly mammoths trampled and fertilised it — and with them the steppe disappeared.

Mammuthus primigenius is the most recognisable animal of the Ice Age. The permafrost of Yakutia preserves its bone better than any other deposit on the planet.

Exhibit — a complete skeleton of a woolly mammoth, the largest exhibit in the collection. The mount is made on a concealed steel armature; installation is carried out on site by the house team.

A complete mammoth skeleton sets the scale for the entire room: the hall is chosen for it, not a place within the hall. It is both a scientific exhibit of the first rank and the ultimate point of an exhibition programme.

As found

The mammoth repeats the stride of the skeleton: sloping back, high domed head, the arcs of the tusks. Snow-covered steppe in low golden light.
