This megalodon tooth has the same imposing height — about 14.5 cm — yet it is perceived first of all as a pure vertical: a dense crown, a strong silhouette, no minor fuss. Otodus megalodon is counted among the largest sharks, and here that fact needs little explanation — the scale is immediately visible.
A shark's skeleton is cartilaginous and scarcely survives in rock, so what has reached us from the megalodon is chiefly teeth. It lost them constantly: within a few weeks a new one grew in the place of the one shed.
This specimen was raised by divers from depth off the coast of Indonesia. Crown height — fourteen and a half centimetres; the enamel is preserved entire, the serrated cutting edge is neither worn nor reworked.
For a tooth of this size such a combination is rarely met with: large specimens almost always bear traces of wear or restoration.
In life
The megalodon comes at the viewer: rows of triangular serrated teeth — the same as the exhibit. The open ocean of the Miocene.
