The fragment weighs 52.6 g — the size of a matchbox. Sharp fracture edges reveal clean metal; the dark exterior crust formed over thousands of years of lying in the mountains.
Agoudal is an iron meteorite named after a Moroccan village in the High Atlas. Its fragments are scattered across mountain valleys for tens of kilometres; the mass whose photograph is set into the frame was found in the same strewn field.
The meteorite iron formed in the core of a shattered protoplanet and is older than any terrestrial rock: this material is about four and a half billion years old.
As found
The main mass of Agoudal lay in the stony foothills of the High Atlas. The rusty crust and bluish-black metal in the fractures are traces of millennia beneath the Moroccan sun.
