The fragment weighs 323.5 grams. The cavities and flows on its surface were etched by incandescent air: during atmospheric entry the surface melts unevenly, and ablation carves curved projections and hollows.
Agoudal is an iron meteorite named after a Moroccan village in the High Atlas. Its fragments are scattered across mountain valleys for tens of kilometres; the mass whose photograph is set into the frame was found in the same strewn field.
The meteorite iron formed in the core of a shattered protoplanet and is older than any terrestrial rock: this material is about four and a half billion years old.
As found
The main mass of Agoudal lay in the stony foothills of the High Atlas. The rusty crust and bluish-black metal in the fractures are traces of millennia beneath the Moroccan sun.
