In the Early Cretaceous, ginkgoes and conifers with a fern undergrowth grew where Liaoning is now, and volcanic ash from time to time covered everything living and turned it into record. It is to this ash that we owe the famous preservation of the Jehol biota.
Jeholosaurus was a small bipedal herbivorous dinosaur about a metre long, one of the early ornithopods. A small skull with a beak and leaf-shaped teeth, a compact body, long hind legs and a very long counterbalancing tail: the build of a runner, not a fighter.
This specimen is complete: skull, vertebral column with long tail, ribs, both pairs of limbs with elongated feet. The skeleton stands mid-stride, head raised, on an oval stone base.
