Mammoth tusks

Woolly mammoth tusks lay in the permafrost of Yakutia for tens of thousands of years and kept their shape, curve and the warm colour of the ivory. A single tusk becomes the defining line of a study; a pair becomes the centre of a large hall. Every specimen comes with a provenance passport.

FAQ

Where do mammoth tusks come from?

From the permafrost of Yakutia: cold and the absence of oxygen preserve woolly mammoth tusks for tens of thousands of years. The tusks in this section are 10,000 to 40,000 years old.

Is it legal to buy a mammoth tusk?

Yes. RELICTUM exhibits are sold legally and handed to the buyer with a provenance passport.

How does mammoth ivory differ from elephant ivory?

A cross-section of a tusk shows intersecting lines — Schreger lines. In mammoths the angle between them is less than 90°, in modern elephants more than 115°. In addition, over millennia in the permafrost, mammoth ivory acquires a characteristic colour and pattern of cracks.

How much does a mammoth tusk cost?

Tusk lots in this section: 5 — single tusks, a pair and a skull with tusks; prices from 500 000 ₽ to 11 500 000 ₽. The price depends on length, weight, preservation and whether the specimen is a pair.

About this selection

How to choose

A mammoth tusk is chosen by length, curve, colour and surface condition. A long tusk with a pronounced spiral reads from the other end of the room, so it needs a diagonal position and a stand with two points of support. An even honey or cream tone and a moderate network of cracks are signs of a well-preserved tusk; dark patches from permafrost minerals are natural too and make a specimen distinctive. A pair of tusks needs symmetry and space — in a small room a single tusk looks better. If the air in the room is dry, ask the manager how the tusk has been stabilised and how to care for it.
